Scarlett Johansson 'Without Makeup' in 'We Purchased a Zoo,' along with other P-Glammed Stars

It's difficult to assume glamor-puss celebrity Scarlett Johansson obtaining kangaroo garbage, is not it? In the end, audiences are conditioned doing driving male co-stars wild with skin-tight leather suits and raspy whispers, less than her knees in dirt attempting to keep a lot of exotic creatures happy. So, to assist audiences wrap their heads round her role like a zookeeper in 'We Purchased a Zoo,' Johansson was adament about firming lower her fashion image. Based on her recent Vanity Fair cover story, "Johansson am going to avoid searching just like a superstar pretending to become a zookeeper running on empty and fueled only by her devotion to her motley range of large felines, zebras and kangaroos that they declined to put on makeup for that film." An actress declining to put on makeup is really a bold move -- specifically in today of up-close HD. Naturally, though, an actress's concept of 'no makeup' most likely differs quite drastically in the average person's. It might mean forgoing cherry-red-colored lipstick and mile-lengthy false lashes, while still piling on the liberal dollop of foundation, powder, blush and anything else which makes an actress with superior genes look much more superior. There is much discussed Emma Stone's "makeunder" for summer time blockbuster 'The Help.' But despite wild hair and moderate makeup, Stone still looked very good. Same applies to Halle Berry in 'Monster's Ball.' Sure, she wasn't as radiant and excellent as she usually looks, but she was still being quite clearly above-average within the looks department. It is good when beautiful stars really get completely ugly for any role. Nicole Kidman in 'The Hours' and Charlize Theron in 'Monster' are two of the most apparent good examples. But they are only some of the ones who've ugged up for that giant screen. That will help you feel better than Hollywood goddesses, if perhaps as it were, we have put together a gallery of stunning stars who significantly changed their searches for a job. Eliza Dushku Talks The League, a White-colored Collar Return and What Really Matters to Her

Eliza Dushku She's fought against Buffy, introduced it on causing us to be desire to take part in the oddest toy house ever, therefore it is no wonder we're not able to have an sufficient quantity of Eliza Dushku. But also for people people still not stylish for the hotness that's Dushku, we're very happy to condition that she's not just a significant face who is able to kick ass. She's furthermore an interesting lady - as proven by tonight's bawdy guest perfect The League (10:30/9:30c, Foreign exchange) - a budding filmmaker, together with a philanthropist. Here, the multi-hyphenate fan fave discusses her latest foray to the funny business of TV and what expect from her in next season.Television Guide Magazine: Precisely how did a enjoyable girl just like you fall together with The League?Eliza Dushku: They referred to as, and Ron [Fox, her love] which i'd literally just seen lots of episodes we'd downloaded. It definitely is strange how that happens. Something happens your radar so the phone rings. We're huge Curb fans, and then we were familiar with [executive producers] Rob and Jackie Schaffer, plus In my opinion everybody knows I'm a huge fan of sports. [Laughs]TV Guide Magazine: Whoever else consider the episodes you seen?Dushku: In my opinion the show is actually funny. I really like the part-improv, part-scripted style, which is not something I've ever really done.TV Guide Magazine: That must be considered just a little intimidating.Dushku: It's! But, when doing the job with individuals who're so excellent advertising online...they deomonstrate up, hold the outline in the scene ready and very deliver. The designers Rob and Jackie are saved to set every second aiding you with [all this. Therefore I think I used to be more intimidated before I obtained there and recognized simply how much they participate. Then you are in a position to just shoot several things and possess the confidence that they're going to pick your better stuff.TV Guide Magazine: What are they using you doing relating to this episode?Dushku: Kevin, who's carried out by Stephen Rannazzisi, will get pressure from his wife, Jenny, to turn on along with a lesser body body fat ass, as she states. So she sends him with a Krav Maga class, which i play in the instructor. He suspects that there are something not just teaching happening between themselves and my character, but he can't tell at first. Can it be Krav Maga or possibly is she striking on him? It type of will get worse when he takes this to his pals to look for the things they believe, you have to uncover what's really happening within the finish.TV Guide Magazine: Are you currently presently competed in Krav Maga?Dushku: I am not. However am competed in being physical. I am able to possess a guy lower. [Laughs]TV Guide Magazine: How will you look foward to comedy?Dushku: I like it! Clearly, so many people are more familiar with me from Buffy and Toy house, plus much more dramatic work. But Go On reaches there, which used to do Jay and Quiet Bob with Kevin Cruz. Which is always "the grass is eco-friendly." When you're undertaking a drama, you think, "God, If only to carry out a comedy," and also you do one and also take action more dramatic. To mix things up making a move like the League might be the best.Television Guide Magazine: Are you able to consider doing another series?Dushku: After Toy house, I truly shot a comedy pilot inside the summer season that was within the producers of two and a half Males. That was if the was questionable whether that relate would return, plus it was this really, really fun pilot. Then a couple of days just before the upfronts, the photos of Chuck Lorre and Ashton Kutcher getting lunch together showed up in this area plus it was like 'ohhhh guy!' We thought maybe we'd get acquired, but CBS clearly filled that slot.TV Guide Magazine: In my opinion your White-colored Collar role this year's season since the Egyptologist was the first time we'd you want a fitted-up developed.Dushku: Yeah, I used to be a very fitted up because, wasn't I? People were my own, personal shoes, I have to admit. I desired to create my own, personal six-inch Prada pumps to the mix. [Laughs]TV Guide Magazine: Any chance we will let you back around the program?Dushku: They have spoken in my opinion about possibly coming back. That was a great deal fun...as well as the show is actually great because it has that combination of the dramatic as well as the comedy in it. Which I really like Matt Bomer. He's a buddy since the Tru Calling days. Really, I merely found a picture of Matt and Zach Galifianakis from in older times and so they both appear like babies!TV Guide Magazine: What's next to suit your needs?Dushku: My cousin Nate and I have got a production company, and we have been employed eight years on our Robert Mapplethorpe project. Well as over people eight years, once i was consistently working, it absolutely was really challenging it finished. Therefore we are focusing on might developing another feature that we will in all probability act in, that's really exciting in my opinion. It's a dramedy. And that we are concentrating on a documentary on Albania - I received my Albanian citizenship this summer season - we shot a distinctive that may really are a series. It's type of my love letter to Albania. I'm trying to broaden my portfolio, I guess! [Laughs]TV Guide Magazine: And people are really diverse.Dushku: Yeah, I realize! I'm also coping with my mother's NGO [non-governmental organization] too. She started a business in Northern Uganda...she's 70-years-old and contains been teaching African politics for a number of years, however it really was her first project and i'm round the board. We're trying to build up a center there for trauma, healing, reflection as well as the rehab of former child soldiers and sufferers in the war in Uganda. This can be a different world personally, but it's so awesome. I used to be asked for to speak at Harvard a few several days ago in regards to the work we're doing there. I'm certainly my mother's daughter, which is a component of my existence I never arrived at tap straight into a great deal inside the 2 decades I used to be riding the acting factor. There's a good deal If only to complete which i appear like I have an chance to make it happen now but nonetheless stay in the acting world.TV Guide Magazine: It's nice being inside a stage within your career to choose the jobs to do, huh?Dushku: I'm so grateful that I have been able to find offers and say "This is often a awesome piece, but it's less than a few things i am searching to accomplish. In . It is sometimes complicated, because regions of me go "Oh, I really wish to work." However, I am concentrating on like 15 something more important which are people from the entire picture.TV Guide Magazine: Has Sarah Michelle Gellar hit you up for just about any guest perfect Ringer?Dushku: She's this kind of sweetie! You understand, the presence of concentrating on a show, you're type of in lockdown, but she's succeeding while using show...but no, I have heard anything of a place yet. [Laughs]TV Guide Magazine: Well you have been busy.Dushku: True. [Laughs] Oh, which i started a deal on Crowdrise.com like a birthday gift this year, where we're trying to boost money for Uganda. We just added a YouTube video, too, because once we were in Uganda, we shot footage - part of our program is using film therapy where we offer the folks there cameras. As opposed to just taking videos, we've them shoot their unique footage and tell their unique tales. We released videos of the couple of from the trip round the Crowdrise page.TV Guide Magazine: Now when was your birthday?Dushku: December 30!TV Guide Magazine: Well this can be a pretty awesome approach to celebrate.Dushku: Thank you!To guide to Eliza's campaign and profit the former child soldiers of Uganda, visit crowdrise.com.Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now!

Tim Burton Circles Miss Peregrines Home For Peculiar Children

EXCLUSIVE: In a match that seems ideal, Tim Burton is in early talks to come aboard Miss Peregrines Home For Peculiar Children, the Ransom Riggs novel that 20th Century Fox and Chernin Entertainment acquired last spring. Burton is in talks to develop the book as a potential directing project, and he would be involved in setting a writer to adapt the tale. It involves Jacob, a 16-year-old whose childhood was filled with stories his grandfather told him about an orphanage for unusual children. Among the residents: a girl who could hold fire in her hands, another whose feet never touched the ground, and twins who communicated without speaking. When his beloved grandfather dies unexpectedly but leaves a message behind for his grandson, the teen heads off to his grandfather’s home on an isolated island off Wales. There he discovers the abandoned remains of Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children. It is in great disrepair and as Jacob explores its bedrooms and hallways, he can see the children were more than peculiar, they might have been there because they were dangerous. And he can’t shake the feeling they are still lurking around. Peter Chernin, Dylan Clark and Jenno Topping are producing. The WME-repped Burton has wrapped Dark Shadows for Warner Bros with Johnny Depp, and directed the feature-length version of his short film Frankenweenie by Disney. Fringe Bosses: Peter Is In Oz Trying to Get Back to Kansas

Josh Jackson Fringe's Peter has returned in the flesh - goodbye, blue shiny ball of light - but the universe he lands in is not his own. After seemingly disappearing into thin air in the Season 3 finale, Peter (Joshua Jackson) returns to a world where no one knows who he is - and he'll try desperately to get back to his own world. Fringe executive producers Jeff Pinkner and J.H. Wyman dish on the prodigal son's return, how this Peter is different and whether he'll make it back to the people he knows and loves. Fringe Scoop: 5 things to know now that Peter has returned Now that Peter has returned, how does this change the dynamic of the show? Jeff Pinkner: The dynamic that we saw at the beginning of this season was "absent Peter." Now that he's back, he is being treated like a fringe event. Some of the audience expected that eventually Peter will return and everything will go back to exactly how it was. Well, that's not really fundamentally possible because the truth is, Peter has returned to a world and a timeline that doesn't remember him, that has no knowledge of him. Walter has knowledge of him, of course, until he was 8 years old when he died, but has no knowledge of this man Peter. Peter is returning with full knowledge. So, he's being treated like a fringe event, but one who has insight into the cases that they're working and can possibly help them. Of course, Peter has an emotional connection to both Walter and the Olivia he's left behind. This Walter and this Olivia that he's now interacting with, look just like them and in many ways feel just like them, but aren't them. What can you tell us about this new Peter? J.H. Wyman: We kind of compare him to a space traveler who arrives on a planet that's not his own. In order to come to this decision that he made back in his timeline to do what he needed to do and was told the repercussions, his becoming a selfless hero to save other people is a journey. He has a more mature understanding of existence and his place in it. Now that he's here, it takes a lot to freak him out. I mean, he's pretty much seen everything. On an existential level, he's definitely more at peace with himself and realized that he is the star of his own book and that he's a hero on a hero's journey. He's trying to get back to those that he loves but it's done not with a panic. It's done with a sense of: Look, if there's a will there's a way. There's definitely a will. He's going to start trying to get back. But the way that he looks at everything now has changed. Pinkner: To supplement that, he's grown a lot emotionally from the guy that we met at the beginning of the series. Fringe Scoop: Peter returns... but no one remembers him! Will there ever be a moment where Peter will just snap and get frustrated that no one remembers him? Wyman: It's not that he's numb. He totally has very intense feelings one way or the other about everything. It's safe to say that as he's adjusting he's going to start to find that calmness maybe give way to a little bit of fear of the unknown. Is he ever going to make it back? Is he ever going to see the people that he loves so much. That longing and missing those relationships really starts to take a toll on someone. Pinkner: He's definitely driven to get back. He just knows that he needs Walter, and Walter is refusing to have anything to do with him. Is there a chance they could ever return to the original timeline? Or do you feel like you guys really need to earn that? Pinkner: Well, for Peter, he wants to go to his timeline. It's not a question of will these characters suddenly flip and will this world suddenly become the world he left? He's literally trying to find a way to travel back to the place he left. He's in Oz trying to get back to Kansas. Everybody just looks exactly like they did when he left Kansas. It's just they're living a much different circumstance because he was never a part of it. Because Peter was never meant to exist, will there be ramifications because of his return? Wyman: Peter believes that some of the events that our team is currently undergoing or some of the cases that are coming our team's way may be linked specifically to the fact that he's popped back into this timeline where he doesn't belong. There may be universal consequences to it. Fringe Bosses: Peter never existed, but the last three seasons still did Will Olivia and Walter ever trust him again? Pinkner: Obviously, that's the question. The question is will Peter now be able to gain these people's trust? Will he help them? Will they help him? What's interesting to us and where a lot of the emotional storytelling is coming from is initially Peter wanted nothing to do with these people. When he was pulled in to work for the Fringe division, largely as a means of just providing an anchor for Walter, Peter wanted nothing to do with these people. He eventually came to care for them and eventually came to fall in love with them. There was a journey over three seasons where Peter finally called Walter "Dad," by the end of Season 3. Now that he is back, he's feeling this emotional connection to characters who suddenly don't know him and have no emotional connection to him. So for Peter, everything's been turned on its head. There are two sides to every coin.Peter is sort of living the other side of the coin right now. Are you happy that Peter is back? Sound off in the comments. Fringe airs Fridays at 9/8c on Fox.

Covert Affairs' Sendhil Ramamurthy: Jai Becomes a Force to Be Reckoned With

Sendhil Ramamurthy Who did Jai call at the end of the Covert Affairs summer finale? His dad Henry (Gregory Itzin)? Liza Hearn (Emmanuelle Vaguier)?Sendhil Ramamurthy had his guess, but was more than happy to be wrong. "I called up [creators] Matt [Corman] and Chris [Ord] ... and they said, 'No, no, no. This is what's happening,'" Ramamurthy tells TVGuide.com. "As soon as they told me, it was like, 'Wow!' It became clear what they were going to do. I was very, very excited."Exclusive: Watch the first four minutes of the Covert Affairs premiereHe hopes fans will too after the answer is revealed in Tuesday's midseason premiere, which will set off a "huge arc" for Jai in Season 2's remaining six episodes. Irritated with the lack of advancement and recognition at the DPD, Jai spent the bulk of Season 2 moping in the background until boss/frenemy Joan (Kari Matchett) dropped a bombshell on him in the finale: He's being relocated to the DPD's Southwest station in Phoenix, forcing Jai to make that mysterious call."He's trying to change his fortune. He's backed up against the wall and he really doesn't have any options," Ramamurthy tells TVGuide.com. "He's always been a little bit of a boy scout. He's, in a way, kind of institutionalized. He went to Yale, he goes through all the right channels. The last scene of the first season, between Henry and Jai, Henry basically says, 'There are two kinds of operatives. There's your kind and there's the kind like Ben Mercer who doesn't follow the rules. Maybe you need to be a little bit more of that.' I think Jai has gone against that simply because of Henry and who he is as a person and his bad reputation in the CIA. Jai doesn't want to turn into his father, but, I think at this point, he realizes that he's going to have to go out to get what he wants."In other words, Jai has no one to rely on but himself now. Perhaps rather naively, the second-generation CIA officer has displayed steadfast loyalty to everyone from his dad - despite Henry trying to blackmail him - to Annie (Piper Perabo) only to have it bite him in the butt. Not even CIA father figure Arthur (Peter Gallagher) came to the rescue after his Phoenix dispatch. So does he turn on one of them with the call? After all, Jai knows Henry is the leak and has so far kept that on the down-low. "He knows he has to leverage any and all information that he has to get out of this situation he's in," Ramamurthy teases.Check out photos from Covert Affairs"Jai is a smart guy," he continues. "What I really like about him is that I really like that when things don't go his way, he's going to sulk a little bit, but he doesn't take things lying down. He figures out how to fix them, and that's what you're going to see now - this new, aggressive Jai. He wants to make sure he's not going to move to Phoenix, that he's not going to be ignored any longer in the CIA. He's not going to sit around, ask and wait."Regardless of whether Jai moves to Phoenix or not, Ramamurthy can promise one thing: There will be more Jai in the next six episodes than ever before."Whenever fans come up to me on the street, they're like, 'Listen, we like the guy. We just don't know what he's doing. He's just there in the background,'" he says. "I'm like, 'I didn't either, but now I do. Trust me, it's worth it. Just watch these next few episodes.' ... I think this episode coming back is a huge step in the right direction for him. Jai becomes a force to reckoned with."Covert Affairs returns Tuesday at 10/9c on USA.

Eames: The Architect and the Painter: Film Review

Anyone who has yielded to the luxurious embrace of an Eames lounge chair is well acquainted with its sensual and aesthetic pleasures but Charles and Ray Eames, the husband and wife team behind the enduring classic furniture designs are less familiar. Their partnership and multifaceted careers -- they're credited with both reinventing the concept of the chair and putting the playfulness back into modernism -- are explored in Eames: The Architect and the Painter, Jason Cohn and veteran broadcast producer Bill Jersey's well-crafted, straightforward and insightful documentary. A must for those with an interest in modern design, the film's portrait of an unconventional marriage during the 1950s, and the alchemy that fueled a professional collaboration between intensely creative personalities, who perfectly complemented one another, should extend its appeal beyond the ranks of subscribers to Architectural Digest and Dwell. Narrated by James Franco, the First Run Features doc opens theatrically in NY and L.A. November 18, and will have its broadcast premiere December 19 as part of the PBS American Masters series. Described by those who knew them as a union between "a painter that didn't paint and an architecture school drop-out who never got his license," the pair initially dedicated themselves to a utopian vision of promulgating beauty to a broad audience through high quality, low cost, mass produced furnishings. Together they helped transform 20th century design in the post-war era. A photographer, furniture designer and a filmmaker who made over 100 shorts including the much imitated Powers of Ten, Charles was a charismatic, workaholic visionary driven by a voracious intellectual curiosity. Their Venice, California studio, likened to a circus and Disneyland by those who reminisce about working there, was built on the model of Renaissance art studio with the master at the top of the pyramid and a host of talented assistants executing his vision. Not surprisingly, Charles often overshadowed his wife but the film goes to some lengths to correct the misperception that he was the only Eames who counted. A painter with a keen design sense, exceptionally gifted in the realm of color and a notorious perfectionist, Ray's aesthetic contributions to the design process were crucial to their success, a fact not lost on her husband who once acknowledged, "Anything I can do, she can do better." She was also an obsessive collector and maker of notes on cigarette papers. Her illustrated letters to Charles, along with some 350,000 photographs and voluminous documents archived at the Library of Congress, and shared with the filmmakers, are a delightful reflection of a teeming creative mind. The doc incorporates archival photographs, television appearances, clips from Eames' films as well as footage of the futuristic IBM Pavilion at the 1964 NY World's Fair and the couple's trendsetting Pacific Palisades home, perched on a bluff overlooking the ocean and filled with fine art and an evolving collage of objects and contraptions that caught their eye. Family members, historians, critics and fellow artists, who worked with or simply admired them, add pertinent commentary, while editor, Don Bernier, smoothly integrates a wealth of material and contributions by multiple lensers. Martin and Baldwin formerly teamed inside it’s Complicated, playing dueling paramours for that affection of Meryl Streep. The concept for that project sprang from Martin showing up with Baldwin within the opening segment of Saturday Evening Live, when Baldwin broke Martin’s hosting record, and Shankman and Gibgot thought they’d create a good screen pairing. Baldwin just teamed together on Rock Of Age range, despite the fact that he appeared shaky about participating for many personal reasons at some point, I’m told he'd a great time around the film. We don’t see lots of comedy tandems any longer, and i believe these men inside a comedy has potential. Martin is repped by WME, Baldwin by CAA and Shankman at UTA.

It's October, Where Would be the Horror Movies?

You'd think that filling the October film release schedule with horror movies is a no-brainer -- the time has come of the season when moviegoers would like to become afraid -- yet only three chillers are reserved between now and Halloween. Which enhances the question: Where possess the horror movies gone? Fans inside the mood for fright have just three options this month. (Four, in the event you count 'Dream House,' which opened up up other family people . of September and, knowing by its poor box office performance, will slink from theaters quickly.) A couple of days ago, there's 'The Human Centipede 2: Full Sequence,' that's opening in a quantity of theaters. Next weekend comes the reboot of 'The Factor.' The following week is 'Paranormal Activity 3.' Then, zip. (Furthermore, you will find Kevin Smith's 'Red Condition,' which some are calling a horror movie, climax possibly a mental thriller/political polemic.) So, where did the frightening movies go? Simply, August. Lately, late summer season has converted into a haven for horror. With the latter days in August, the studios' slates of action blockbusters are spent, but you will discover still genre movie fans hungry for jolts and shocks. Recent Augusts have observed such horror hits as 'The Final Destination,' 'Halloween II' and 'The Last Exorcism.' This year, in the last 2 days of August as well as the initial few times of September, there has been six horror releases: 'Fright Evening,' 'Don't Hesitate in the Dark,' 'Evidence from the Haunting,' 'Shark Evening 3d,A 'Apollo 18' and 'Creature.' The procedure seems to own backfired. Aside from 'Don't Hesitate in the Dark,' none of individuals movies made greater than $20 million. 'Paranormal Activity 3' - Trailer No. 2 Is always that why there so handful of horror movies scheduled for October? Not always. In large measure, it's because of 'Paranormal Activity 3.' The found-footage-style horror franchise has transformed 'Saw' since the annual ritual for Halloween moviegoers. "'Saw' has centered October for any very long time,Inch states Rob Bock, a box office analyst and horror film expert at Exhibitor Relations Company. "Art galleries didn't dare open anything against it. ['Saw' distributor] Lionsgate really did have that month to itself." Now, however, "'Paranormal Activity' has that slot," according to him. However, there's another possible cause of the October dearth. "We're just getting an off year." For fans, if you feel deprived this Halloween season, there is not much consolation to suit your needs. The next small-glut of horror movies doesn't come before month of the month of january, another traditional drop zone for movies that art galleries have little expect. You will have to keep your fears in check for the time being. Follow Gary Susman on Twitter @garysusman. Photo credits: IFC Films ('Human Centipede 2'), Universal ('The Thing')

Vehicle for vehicle, contended Rooney, its one of the most secure weekends of year being going somewhere. Really, less people die of causes on that weekend than typically in some cases, his research told him. As well as, since less people are watching television inside the fourth, he added, I suppose less die of monotony. Schmidt to appear at Senate Judiciary Committee

When Google's Eric Schmidt appears before a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Wednesday to answer antitrust questions, the entertainment lobby will be watching -- and it's likely that more than a few in the biz will harbor a feeling of satisfaction in seeing him in the hotseat.Google's relationship with Hollywood has at times been chilly, but among lobbyists in Washington it's often more like permafrost, as the industry lobby complaints that the search giant hasn't done nearly enough to combat piracy, or in some cases is aiding and abetting it. Industry lobbyists are making some effort to persuade lawmakers on the Senate antitrust subcommittee to query Schmidt about copyright issues, but the session is focused on concerns that Google has grown to a point where competitors are at a disadvantage.Schmidt is scheduled to speak first, followed by a panel that includes Jeff Katz, CEO of NexTag, and Jeremy Stoppelman, co-founder and CEO of Yelp."Anybody in the larger entertainment industries has had to deal with antitrust issues," said Chris Castle, a music and technology lawyer. "They have had their mergers and acquisitions scrutinized. We have a long history in the entertainment business of dealing with government. So the idea that a company could amass a fortune without having to account for what a lot of people see are pretty egregious shortcomings is frustrating." "The fact that he has agreed to testify...I think is the beginning of something, but it is only the beginning," he added. In advance of the hearing, Google has set up a blog page refuting the notion that it's the omnipresent gateway to the web. "Using Google is a choice. Sure, Google has lots of users, but Google is more like a GPS for the Internet -- a helpful guide, but not necessary to get around," the post stated, noting that sites once-thriving AOL and MySpace were also once called "gatekeepers."Schmidt is opposed to the most significant piece of Hollywood-backed legislation to come before Congress this year, the Protect IP Act, which is aimed at the cutting off support for "rogue" sites that are devoted to trafficking in pirated content. The Senate version has a provision that requires that "information location tools," like search engines, take measures to remove or disable access to "rogue" sites and to remove hypertext links, But Schmidt has called the proposed legislation "simple solutions to complex problems," and said that the bill's method of cutting off illegal sites' access to the domain name system had free speech implications.Nevertheless, for some time Google has been well aware that it is an increasing target, and has expanded its lobbying presence in the Capital. In April, Google's general counsel Kent Walker faced a House hearing in which he had to fend off criticism from some lawmakers that the company had not done enough to limit listing of pirated content atop search results and in its autocomplete feature. Walker insisted that Google has been playing "the Whac-A-Mole game" as much as other companies, but he cautioned Congress to not go overboard in mandating what search engines can and cannot do.Late last year, Google announced a series of steps to combat online infringement, including a vow to act within 24 hours on takedown notices it receives from copyright owners and deleting terms closely associated with infringement from appearing in autocomplete. On Sept. 2, Walker posted a progress report on a Google blog in which he said, among other things, that they have improved procedures to make sure that its AdSense program doesn't appear on sites with pirated content, and that legitimate music sites are getting greater visibility. "There is plenty more to be done, and we look forward to further refining and improving our processes in ways that help both rightsholders and users," Walker wrote. The Recording Industry Assn. of America, however, found the progress wanting. "We appreciate that Google is working with us to develop a system to send Google bulk notices about the use of AdSense on sites that facilitate online theft," wrote Steven Marks, the RIAA's executive vice president and general counsel. "However, given the significant benefits Google receives from these services and its commitments via the official guidelines that regulate advertisers, Google should do more to ensure that it does not place and profit from ads on sites that offer illegal content." He added that Google continues to list unauthorized sites before legitimate ones in search results, and, while it has improved the speed with which it responds to takedown notices, it hasn't been "effective in terminating repeat offenders." Happy 45th Birthday, Adam Sandler! What's His Finest Onscreen Moment?

Forty-five years ago today, a baby boy named Adam Richard Sandler was born to an electrical engineer and a nursery school teacher in Brooklyn. After breaking big on Saturday Night Live at the age of 24, Sandler would go on to become one of the most successful actor-comedians of our generation and an even more successful movie producer. In spite of the scathing reviews that his films generate, we still love him as an entertainer, laugh maker and occasionally dramatic actor. So gather around the cake, sing-squawk a few off-key bars of “Happy Birthday” and let’s name Sandler’s finest onscreen moment. So many movies to choose from! Although the Saturday Night Live alum has had some funny — adorable even — moments in legitimate comedies like Happy Gilmore and The Wedding Singer, showed some dramatic range in Spanglish and Reign Over Me, and you know, successfully fit into a pair of tight jean shorts in You Don’t Mess with the Zohan, I think his finest moment onscreen occurred in Paul Thomas Anderson’s 2002 drama Punch-Drunk Love. In an unlikely turn for Sandler, the actor provided depth, darkness and sadness as Barry Egan, a lonely, harmonium-tapping executive who flies into occasionally violent bouts of rage. In the following [NSFW] scene, watch as Sandler’s character is pushed to his limit after being scammed by a phone-sex company and demands to speak with a supervisor (Philip Seymour Hoffman). For this role, Sandler earned his first and only Golden Globe nomination. Now, what do you consider to be Sandler’s finest onscreen moment?

Drive-Inspired Sketches by Chromatics, Desire Include Track Listings of Unused Film Score

The musical partnership between director Nicolas Winding Refn and electronic musician Johnny Jewel dates back to Refn’s Bronson, which used a track from Jewel’s group Glass Candy to strike its stylized period feel. For Refn’s latest film, the L.A.-set crime thriller Drive, he turned once more to Jewel to help create an ’80s-tinged pop synth sound — and the inspiration seemed to go both ways, as evidenced by drawings and a full collection of Drive-inspired tracks created by Jewel and his musical collaborators. Two of Jewel’s groups, Chromatics and Desire, have tracks featured on the soundtrack to Drive (“Tick of the Clock” and “Under Your Spell,” respectively). But the score to Drive is largely comprised of compositions by composer Cliff Martinez, built around a handful of mostly electronic tracks that also include Kavinsky’s “Night Call” and College ft. Electric Youth’s “A Real Hero.” “Johnny had scored two specific scenes — one was ‘Tick of the Clock’ which was in the beginning from Chromatics and then there was ‘Under Your Spell’ later on,” Refn told Movieline via telephone earlier today. “Then I had the College song and the Kavinsky song, and I had Cliff Martinez kind of emulate the feel of those sounds and those songs into a score.” Jewel, meanwhile, wound up composing his own Drive-inspired tracks at Refn’s encouragement. These unused score tracks appear to have surfaced as part of a 30-drawing collection of sketches by Chromatics and Desire inspired by scenes from the film; on the blog Primitive Desire, Jewel’s Desire collaborator Megan Louise notes that the songs listed “will be coming out on Johnny Jewel & Nat Walker’s soundtrack project ‘Symmetry’ in the fall.” Full two-part track listing follows, but beware spoilers! 1. Isolation (3:10) Winner Take All (2:42) Death Mask (1:22) Love Theme/Air (2:01) Magic Gardens (1:40) The Family (1:33) Rearview Mirror Pt 1 (0:37) Rearview Mirror Pt 2 (1:04) Irene’s Eyes (3:01) Lady (2:56) The Midnight Sun (1:37) City of Dreams (2:42) Beyond the Rim (2:18) Love Bite (3:40) Driver’s Theme (4:02) Baby (2:35) Bernie’s Theme (1:40) The Nightshift (1:00) Nino’s Death (1:41) Love Theme/Earth (3:27) Fading Away (2:44) Memories Are Forever (1:50) 2. Flashback (2:57) Paradise Lost (0:28) Car Jack (2:50) Behind the Wheel (7:28) End Game (2:21) Murder Motel (4:29) The Crimson Torch (2:43) Fragments (0:43) Strangers (4:03) Music Box (0:43) Paper Chase (3:00) Mr. Midnight (3:28) Shannon’s Death (1:11) Blood Sport (2:26) The Nightshift/Reprise (0:58) Outside Looking In (2:21) Symphony of Light (3:15) All the Faces (2:46) Love Theme/Water (4:14) Echoes of the Mind (6:29) The rest of the drawings are taken from stills from the film, depicting various scenes of Driver (Ryan Gosling), the neighbor he falls for (Carey Mulligan), and the various forces he comes to contend with as he crosses paths with seedy crime bosses and thugs in L.A. They’ve got a charming Etch-a-Sketch quality to them, but what’s most striking is how vividly they capture scenes from the film in spare black and white renderings. Click here to see all 30 of the Drive-inspired sketches, but again, potential spoilers abound, so view with caution. [Primitive Desire]

James Franco was considered for Breaking Dawn

Director Bill Condon has confirmed that internet gossip suggesting James Franco wanted a role in Twilight: Breaking Dawn is true."He told a friend of mine, who then sent the message along to me. And for a moment it was like, okay, what could James Franco play that wouldn't feel like Where's Waldo?" he told MTV.Sadly for Franco's fans, no obvious role existed. "I really thought about it for a second, and nothing made sense," Condon added."If it had made sense, and frankly if I had called and said 'Do you want to play that vampire from that country,' it would have involved hanging around for two months in a scene with 80 people. And I don't know if he really would have wanted to do it."However, the director claims there's no, ahem, bad blood between him and the 127 Hours star."I think he thinks this somehow involves some big rejection of the idea.
